Why One Big AI Prompt Usually Breaks

Learn why stuffing a whole workflow into one prompt usually falls apart, and how to split AI work into steps that are easier to trust and repeat.

Most bad AI workflows start with a reasonable idea: put the whole job in one prompt and let the model handle it.

3. Judge

Decide what is important.

4. Deliver

Turn the result into the format someone needs.

Each step has a narrower job, which means the instructions can be clearer and the output is easier to check.

Say you want a weekly competitor update.

A single giant prompt might say:

Research these 10 competitors, find anything new from the last 7 days, summarize the important changes, and write a short report for our sales team.

That sounds fine, but it hides too much.

A step-based version is more stable:

Good prompts are usually boring

People often look for a clever master prompt.

Most of the time, the better answer is a plain prompt with a narrow scope.

A useful task prompt usually says:

  • what the step is responsible for
  • what inputs it gets
  • what output format it must return
  • what rules it should follow
  • what it should ignore

That is less exciting than prompt tricks, but it works better for repetitive jobs.

You should split the workflow when any of these are true

A job probably needs multiple steps if:

  • it uses more than one source
  • it mixes research and writing

  • you would review different parts in different ways
